Crotons are a wonderful plant for fall. They look fallish though so I use them on campus when I change out a bed from a summer to a fall planting. Their leaves will bleach out a little (or sometimes a lot) in the full sun of summer but they can take the full sun of fall. They combine well with ornamental chilies or anything with a blue flower.
